The glucose blood test measures the amount of glucose in the blood and is one of the most commonly ordered tests in a doctor’s office.  The blood test can be used to screen or diagnose Diabetes, pre-diabetes, hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, as well as other conditions. Those that have certain conditions such as diabetes are required to monitor their glucose levels, through daily blood tests. The Glucose blood test is also referred to as blood sugar, fasting blood sugar and blood glucose by medical professionals. Because glucose is an important aspect of the human body it is important that it be monitored and controlled. Just a few of the functions that require glucose are the brain, nervous system and a person’s energy levels.

Reasons For A Glucose Blood Test

There are a number of reasons that a glucose blood testing series might be ordered. They can range from healthy individuals to those with a variety of symptoms. Below are some of the most common reasons that a glucose blood test is ordered:

  • Tiredness or fatigue
  • Changes in vision, such as blurred vision
  • Confusion

Certainly these are not the only symptoms that warrant the ordering of a glucose blood test, however they are some of the more common ones. Glucose levels are frequently ordered for pregnant women and those that have presented in emergency rooms with certain ailments or disorders.  Elevated glucose levels over time can damage your and blood vessels, kidneys, eyes, and nerves.
