Estradiol

Although estradiol is found in both men and women, just at different levels, it is the predominant sex hormone found in women. Also called E2, it is the major estrogen in humans, impacting reproduction, sexual function, bone health, nerves, metabolism and heart health.

It is important that this hormone is within the normal range because estradiol not only impacts reproductive and sexual functioning, but also affects other systems, including bone health, heart health, nerves and metabolism. Both men and women with low levels of estradiol may be at risk for osteoporosis. Women should get this blood test done in conjunction with progesterone when evaluating menopausal symptoms. Men should keep levels within the normal range to lower cardiovascular risk and enlargement of the prostate. Men naturally convert testosterone into estradiol, resulting in lower testosterone levels. This becomes a problem as they age and have decreased levels of testosterone.

Estradiol levels should be considered during any anti-aging or hormone treatment therapy. Keeping estradiol and other primary hormones at optimal levels is an important part of keeping the body as young as possible, delaying the effects of aging. It is also important to balance estradiol and testosterone levels for general health and well-being.
