Liver Function Test

FASTING TEST

Liver Function test is a panel of blood tests that measure specific proteins and liver enzymes in the blood. They help to provide a complete evaluation of the condition of the liver. The tests assess various aspects of the liver. The tests look at the strength of the liver cells, the liver̢‰s functioning and some of the diseases attributed to the biliary system.

The Liver Function Test is ordered to see if there is any liver damage and to assess whether the liver is diseased. This test measures the follow elements:

Proteins

It checks the levels of the proteins albumin, globulin and the total protein in the blood. The measures of these elements evaluate how the kidney is functioning and can be indicative of a person̢‰s health and nutrition.

Enzymes

Total Bilirubin: The test is used to determine the levels of bilirubin in the blood. The liver removes this enzyme from the blood. Elevated levels of bilirubin may be indicative of liver damage or disease.

Alkaline Phosphatase: This enzyme resides primarily in the liver and bones. If there are high levels of this enzyme present, there is damage to the liver.

GGTP: This test measures the amounts of GGTP found in the blood. GGTP resides in the muscles, liver and heart. High values of this enzyme can result from medications, vitamins, alcohol use and certain diseases.
Other enzymes tested by the Liver Functioning Test include an evaluation of the LDH, SGOT and ALT enzymes.
