The
PSA is a protein produced by the prostate gland. The PSA blood test can detect
the levels of PSA antigen in the blood. The PSA blood test is highly effective
in the early detection of prostate cancer.
While less than four ng/ML is present in the blood of healthy men. These levels
increase in men who have either prostate cancer or some other type of prostate
issue. In 25% of prostate cancer cases, men have PSA levels between 4 and 10
ng/mL. If the PSA levels are above 10 ng/mL , the chances that the man has
cancer increases to about 70%. The majority of increases in PSA levels is
attributed to the presence of cancer.
Men tend to have issues with their prostate as they advance in age. Prostate
disorders often begin as the enlargement, prostatic hyperplasia, or
inflammation of the prostate, prostatitis. While these conditions do not cause
cancer, they can lead to prostate cancer.
The Health Testing Centers offer the PSA blood test and PAP blood test together
to give a complete and accurate diagnosis. The PAP test checks for the presence
of prostatic acid phosphatase enzyme. This enzyme is released into the blood
stream when the prostate is not functioning properly.
